Security: Windows XP Firewall

Firewalls keep your computer and your personal details safe when you are online. A firewall is a system that prevents unauthorised access to a computer over a network, such as the internet. Firewalls can be either hardware or software - businesses tend to use hardware, home users tend to use software. A firewall program examines all data to determine whether to forward it to its destination or reject it. This provides added security to your PC. You can purchase firewall software from our online shop.

Sometimes the operating system you use could have security loop holes, allowing unauthorised access to your computer. For this reason, you should always keep your computer up to date. Learn more about keeping your computer up to date here.

Windows XP has a built-in firewall for each dialup or network connection. You can turn on the XP firewall, by following the below instructions;

  1. Click Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications>Network Connections
  2. In the Network Connections Window, right click on your internet/network connection
  3. From the drop-down menu, select Properties then select the Advanced Tab
  4. Tick the Box located under "Internet Connections Firewall" and select OK to close the Properties Window

This is the easiest way to provide basic protection for your PC. Non Windows XP users can purchase additional software - such as McAfee Firewall (see more information)
